Terroirists on the rampage in Sablet

And now some real news… from Sablet.

Twenty hardy vignerons who make Sablet AOC wines went for a strut and a sip through their terroir today.

Organised by Christian Bonfils and myself, the idea of our Journee Terroir was to assemble some folk of the village to visit various parcels of Sablet, then taste the wine from those terroirs.

Georges Truc explaining les Briguieres

Guided by genial geologist Georges Truc, we visited the Briguieres just north of Gigondas; le Cheval Long which, as its name suggests, is a long ridge to the east of the village; the more sandy soils just next to the village and the rocky and hot Plan de Dieu on the other side of the Ouveze a good kilometre to the west of Sablet.

Over thirty samples awaited us back at the Salle du Moulin in the centre of the village, samples that Christian and I had cajoled from vignerons late last week. The flight of 10 whites showed great “coherence” in that, even though some are sensuous enough to give you the sensation of having your lover’s tongue in your mouth, all show great acidity and balance. The reds were even more impressive with some truly magnificent wines that even I, a resident of the village, had not yet tried.

Great terroir, talented winemakers. All we need to do now is talk about ourselves. Which is what VinoSolex is all about.

I am sorry it didn’t work out for us to meet while we were in Sablet the first two weeks of May. Unfortunately, the weather was not great. We are returning to Sablet at the beginning of September for about three weeks. I have not spent nearly enough time exploring/tasting the wines of Sablet. I am going to make a point to do this. Unfortunately, we see very few wines from Sablet here in California so we don’t have any on our wine list at Bistro Des Copains http://www.bistrodescopains.com

Hello Mr Solex ! I hope you enjoy a visit to the Mas de l’Ecriture just as much as I enjoyed tasting their wines ! How about you save me a seat on the solex one of these days so we can share a decent glass of wine :D ? I’m now very curious to have a sip of the Sablet AOC wines, thanks for the tip !
Kindest regards,
Anne

Lincoln Siliakus

Lincoln moved to France ten years ago. He started this blog as he rode his 1966-model Solex motorbike from Chablis to Sablet in May and June 2009. His stories about his 2-wheeled wanderings through the heartland of French terroirism are amplified by snippets about the bizarre and compelling world of wine in France as seen by a wide-eyed Australian. As a journalist with L’Amateur de Bordeaux, he has a professional obligation to taste as much as he can, and this blog covers all of his wine-based travel, whether through the heartland of South France or Hong Kong and Australia. He is planning, as the French would say, to “recidive” soon with other Solex trips: a quick one in autumn to Champagne and one of several weeks next summer along the Loire.
